If you get this, you are awesome.
Greetings, readers! For this special Saturday article, I wanted to talk about the Achilles Beta that Battlefront unleashed on the masses. To start, a bit of background info, then we dig into the meat of the rules themselves.
So, before you close out that browser window thinking this will be a tirade, it isn’t. I am just going to provide my thoughts on the units as presented. Not literally, because the actual PDF looks fantastic. I love the new feel and I think that typos aside it was a major success in that regard. What I am talking about is the rules. So, for the handful of you who care for my thoughts and opinions on stuff, take a read. Mostly, this article will concern points and balance, as well as possible changes, more than tactics and strategy.
If you frequent the various Dust forums and sites, you know that myself and some of the original Dust-War Crew were Fantasy Flight Games playtesters for Dust Warfare. Before the big switcheroo to Battlefront, Achilles had been worked up for months to be a tuned, balanced expansion with few issues remaining to be ironed out by Battlefront when they inherited it.
Somewhere along the line, things broke down. Apparently, FFG didn’t provide material for Achilles and until I sent in my notes from the playtest, Battlefront didn’t have anything to work off of. Furthermore, it seems like Battlefront looked it over and then proceeded to just go with a near full-on copy of the Dust Tactics cards for the units with a smattering of ideas from the playtest. Out of the gate, I was shocked (duh) and a bit appalled. Now that a day has passed and I have stewed on it, I have taken a more objective look at the units to see how they stack up in the existing metagame.
Plus, a lot of “this is good” and “this looks OP” and “this is pretty bad” type stuff, giving a general idea of what I think is worth running as is, plus some insight from the FFG Playtester point-of-view. Of course, this being a Beta, these are just the initial thoughts. When it is finally released, I will revisit these thoughts and see what has and hasn’t changed and sum up where things look to be heading meta-wise.
Anyhow, let us jump right in, shall we?
